Prenatal or Antenatal Care – Counselling Part 2

pregnant-black-womanA rather alarming percentage of  women of child-bearing age do not disclose their pregnancies or seek the necessary medical attention until after the first trimester (first 12 weeks of pregnancy) has passed – unless they have some type of complication. Undoubtedly the first trimester is the most crucial part of the development of the unborn child as it is in this period there is complete differentiation of cells and formation of organs of the body as we know it.

It is during this period that abnormalities may occur due to the use of medications, drugs, alcohol and even smoking.

If you are pregnant or become pregnant, your health care provider should be informed at the earliest to guide you, ensuring that you have an optimal pregnancy and the desired outcome.

On your first visit you will be asked the date of the first day of your last period. This date is used to calculate your gestational age (GA), expected date of delivery (EDD) and it will also be used to estimate if the fundal height of your abdomen is adequate. Continue reading

King of the fruits – Mango!

It’s the season of the delicious and succulent mango. Get the most out of mango season before it ends. We’ve all waited in line for our ‘mango-in-sauce’ with or without pepper, a famous St Lucian delicacy.

Mango is rich in all vitamins (A, B1, B2, B3, B6, and C), minerals, proteins, carbohydrates (including sugar) and fibre. It restores elasticity to the skin and is great for providing moisture to dry skin. It helps relieve clogged pores and the rich vitamin C content helps treat pimples and acne. Although it’s safe to use mango pulp on the skin, it is not advisable to use the mango peel, as it contains Urushiol which is toxic and may cause allergic reactions in sensitive skin. There are so many merits that go along with not only ingesting this delightful fruit, but also applying it to various parts of the body.

Is Personal Training Right For You?

The biggest problem today is the lack of self-motivation to go to the gym.  For some reason, out growing your blue jeans is not enough of a ‘butt buster’ to get off the couch and workout. Unfortunately, many people are forced to get into an exercise routine because the doctor just hit them with, “you’re 45, overweight, and have high cholesterol” – the three primary risk factors for heart disease.  Of course, others have chosen a career that doesn’t allow them enough time to workout.  In either case, a personal trainer is the best way to go! A Healthy Smile is a Healthy You!!!

The benefits of good oral health extend beyond a brilliant smile.  Maintaining healthy oral hygiene is an important part of living an overall healthy lifestyle.  Research shows that the oral cavity can be a gateway to several diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease and low birth weight. Frequently, these diseases will manifest orally, prior to systemic detection.  This occurs because bacterial infections within the oral cavity can spread through the bloodstream and colonise remote organ walls.  Additionally, toxins from this bacteremia (the presence of bacteria in the blood, which is always abnormal) can cause severe infections in people with immunological and nutritional deficiencies.  Regular dental visits are therefore critical in maintaining the wellbeing of your entire oral cavity (made up of the teeth, gums and tongue) and to prevent potentially life-threatening diseases.  Continue reading

How to Get a Clearer, Smoother Face

Back in the old days, most people considered getting a facial to be a luxury only the rich and famous could afford. Nowadays, people realise that it’s a fundamental part of both skincare and wellness, and should be a part of your regular maintenance regime, even if there’s nothing “wrong” with your skin.

Basically, facials are the ultimate in anti-aging treatments. The deep cleansing, exfoliation and hydration only a facial can provide, rids the skin of dirt, debris and other flaws caused by environmental factors to help your skin maintain a healthy balance and its ability to fight aging. Professional cleansing also enables deeper penetration of products and therefore you get better results. Research shows that getting a facial is even better than getting a good night’s rest since facials remove toxins and dirt accumulated over time – though we definitely recommend getting both!

When someone is struggling with acne, suffering from a dull complexion, or facing a superficial skin issue, regular facials can help fix these problems. Facials can give you a clean and bright complexion, as well as remove dirt and blackheads.

Take the Plunge!

Go for a Swim

Do me a favour. Stop five random people during your daily routine and ask them whether or not they can swim. Not tread water, not dog paddle or stay afloat, but swim – as in do a proper stroke. You will be amazed to find out that the majority of answers may be a no. Strange right? Especially considering that we live on a small rock, completely surrounded by water. To be quite frank, this is not unusual; it is actually the norm in most other islands in the Caribbean and though younger kids seem to be able to swim, their parents, have not yet taken the plunge!

Let’s Get All Muddy!

Most people today are striving for perfect health, which includes having healthy-looking skin, a fit body and seemingly eternal youth. A good source of eternal youth, believe it or not, is the mud body wrap. With natural healing properties, mud body wraps are known to relax sore or tense muscles, stimulate circulation, draw out impurities as it cleanses, and renew firmness and elasticity to the skin’s surface.

Mud, being a detoxifier stimulates blood flow underneath the skin and pulls out toxins that have entered your body through the food you eat, the chemicals in the air and any medicines you may take. The process includes the mud being applied to your skin, you are then wrapped tightly in order to keep the mud warm, which aids in the detoxification. After about 20 minutes, you are unwrapped and the mud is washed off, revealing radiant skin.
As a result of the mud wrap process, your skin is left feeling cleaner, softer and tighter, thereby, appearing more youthful. Mud body wraps have also been known to tighten and firm up the entire body, making you feel leaner and slimmer.
